ALUMNI Assessments

There are several assessments available to you through the Pomerantz Career Center. Most of them are based on John Holland's occupational codes R I A S E C (realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional).

You can complete the following assessments on your own. Please print your results and schedule an appointment with a Career Advisor to interpret them for you.

Career Key
• Cost: $7.95
• Available online
• Includes brief inventories on interests, abilities (student's perception only, not an ability
test), and values (one short set of questions)
• Printed summary available after completion
• Linked directly to the Occupational Outlook Handbook for more information on job titles
• Good for students who need quick information and enjoy getting information online

eDISCOVER
• Cost: free to University of Iowa students
• Requires a unique login available through the Pomerantz Career Center or stop by 100 Pomerantz Center, Suite C310 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m to pick up a login and instruction sheet.
• Enter eDISCOVER, a full service career planning web system
• Take three assessments—interests, values, and skills.
• Use the results to go directly to career information, planning tools, and other resources

Below is a quick summary of additional assessments available through the Pomerantz Career Center for a fee. Your advisor at the Pomerantz Career Center will help you choose which assessment is best for you.

Strong Interest Inventory
• Cost: $10.00 (payable by check or U-bill in the Pomerantz Career Center)
• Available ONLY at a career advising appointment where you will be given a login and passcode to take the test on the web.
• Is an in-depth, well researched assessment
• Takes about 30-40 minutes to complete online (select "Take It" for the 1st assessment which is labeled Strong).
• Requires a second appointment for a full interpretation by a career advisor
• Compares students' "likes and dislikes" with those of people in career areas
• Accurate, organized, specific

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
• Personality tool which provides feedback on where you like to focus your attention, your information gathering preference, decision-making style and your orientation to the outside world. Uses four letters to represent 16 different personality types.
• Cost: $14 (payable by check or U-bill in the Pomerantz Career Center)
• Available ONLY at a career advising appointment where you will be given a login and passcode to take the instrument on the web.
• Is a well-researched inventory that has multiple applications including relevance to career and workplace "fit."
• Takes about 20 minutes to complete online (select "Take It" for the 2nd assessment which is labeled MBTI).
• Requires a second appointment for a full interpretation by a career advisor
• Suggests careers most attractive to the student's type.
