think Internships
Experiential Education
Real-life experiences, such as externships and
internships, help prepare you for future careers.
Another
form of experiential education is on and off campus
involvement, like clubs, professional associations,
organizations and volunteer work.
Pomerantz Career Center offers a large variety of
choices for students to participate in, such as the
Washington Center and the USA Program.
Internships are win-win
partnerships
for employers
and students! Students gain valuable hands-on
experience in the workplace, learn more about their
career choice and make contributions to
organizations while still in college.
What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?
Mock Interviews
Pomerantz Career
Center offers mock
interviews each
semester
to give
students the great opportunity to improve their
interviewing skills.
Mock interviews are beneficial for
students and
employers. Students gain added interview
experience, and employer representatives gain the
opportunity to meet and conduct interviews with
University of Iowa students who will soon be
interviewing for positions.
Mock interviews will take place
Jan. 31 - May 4 on Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday. If you have any questions about
mock
interviews,
contact Pomerantz Career Center at
careercenter@uiowa.edu.
A Whole Lotta Advice
Exploring for your Future Career
Let's say a random stranger on the street gives you
a
blank notebook and asks you to write down as
many jobs as you can possibly think of. How many
pages do you think you can fill? Three?
Five? Not even one?
Most students are only familiar
with jobs held by their parents, family members, and
friends, or those obvious jobs, such as butcher,
baker and candlestick maker! The truth is, millions of
jobs are out there, and
familiarizing yourself with as many occupations as
you can is the first step toward making a career
decision!
During winter break, spend time
listening to the 'shop-talk' around you. Talk to friends
you
have not seen in a long time, and ask them what
they are planning to do with their careers. Ask your
parents to describe a typical day at their job.
Eavesdrop on
people walking down the street or in the mall - they
will most
likely be discussing their work.
Soak up as much information as you
can about the world of work. This information will
broaden
your awareness of jobs and career fields. After you
list more jobs in your "career notebook," you can
begin to focus on what types of jobs fit you, based
on your interests, abilities and values. Happy
snooping!
What Your Parents Never Told You
Joking Around...
Employer to Applicant: "In this job,
we need someone
who is responsible."
Applicant: "I'm the one you want. On
my last job, every time anything went wrong, they
said I was responsible." (realestatehumor.com)
Did You Know...
More than 2,000 interviews took place
this fall at
Pomerantz Career Center.
Dear Ivanna Work
Dear Ivanna Work,
I need to create a resume, but the only work
experience I have is a waiter position and a
couple other summer jobs. What do I do?
Sincerely,
Writing from Pizza Hut
Dear Writing from Pizza Hut,
Never fear! All work experience is good experience,
so don't discount your past jobs.
Chances are, you
have gained some great transferable skills in
customer service and problem-solving. If you have
handled money, trained new employees or supervised
any staff during your shifts, these are great skills to
add to a resume as well.
