Dear Ivanna Work

Dear Ivanna Work,

I’m pretty new to this college thing, and I’m just now feeling comfortable with campus and my classes. I’m not ready to add anything too time consuming to my plate, for fear that I’ll get overwhelmed. At the same time, I know it’s important to be filling up my resume. How do I ‘beef‘ up my resume without actually having a formal internship?

Sincerely,
Where‘s the beef?

Dear Where’s the Beef,

Good news! While it is important to be ‘beefing’ up your resume at all times, you CAN do that even if you do not currently have an internship. Here are a few, non-time consuming, ways you can gain experience:

  • Join a club or two – there are many clubs and organizations where you can meet people with similar professional interests and network
  • Take on a leadership position – after you’ve joined organizations, take a role in the structure of that community
  • Get a job – there are many part-time jobs that can help you build important skills
  • Volunteer your time – volunteering is a great way to develop skills, give back to the community and can lead to career exploration
  • Ask a professional – there are many activities, programs, and events sponsored by the Pomerantz Career Center that could help you get ahead in your career

If you continue to seek out ways to ‘beef’ up that resume and build new skills, you will be amazed at the opportunities you will find!

Sincerely,
Ivanna Work
