What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Upcoming Career Fairs

If you still don’t know how to answer that question, you should attend a Career Fair. Attending a career fair can provide you with information on different job opportunities and help you understand what type of job you might be looking for.

It is also a primary place to network with different companies who are seeking for educated and motivated employees. Check out the upcoming fairs this semester.

Dear Ivanna Work

I’m a sophomore having difficulty finding a summer internship.  It seems that companies only consider juniors or seniors or say that I need more experience.  How do I get my first internship if I need to have experience?

Signed,

Internship Incompatible

----------

Dear Incompatible,

There are several ways you can get experience and show an employer that you’re ready for your first internship!

Job shadow—this allows you to get an inside look at a particular profession.  You’ll have the opportunity to talk in depth with someone in your chosen field and gain insight and knowledge as to what that career involves.

Volunteer—Volunteering with a campus/community group shows dedication toward a particular cause.  It’s also a great way to learn more about a particular organization and gain job-related skills.

Summer/part-time job—Look for positions with companies that are related to your career focus.  Even though you may just be answering phones or filing papers, you’ll also have the opportunity to network with professionals who can provide future connections.

The above options are all great ways to gain experience to list on your resume and will contribute to making you a qualified candidate. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Ivanna Work
