Community-Based Learning Program

The University of Iowa Community-Based Learning Program (CBLP) strengthens students' learning opportunities by linking the University's teaching, research and service mission to community needs and strengths. The CBLP helps students develop as civic-minded community members, further preparing them to be successful in their careers and active citizens of the future.

Students interested in exploring majors and careers and building their resumes with experiences gained through volunteering, academic service-learning and participation in internships with nonprofit agencies can also receive assistance from CBLP.

The CBLP is a resource for faculty seeking community partnerships for service learning, community-based research, and public scholarship. The program also functions as a point of contact for community-based organizations seeking student involvement and/or faculty partnerships.

Information for Students

The Community-Based Learning Program (CBLP) helps students achieve the "Serve" and "Engage" components of The IOWA Challenge through meaningful connections within the local community and beyond. Whether you choose to get involved through volunteering, academic service learning or nonprofit internships, the CBLP will help you locate opportunities to:

  • connect what you learn in the classroom to real world issues and local needs;
  • explore careers and majors;
  • add career-related experience to your resume;
  • develop leadership skills;
  • find mentors;
  • or simply give back to the community through service.

Information for Community Partners

The Community-Based Learning Program (CBLP) is a point of contact for nonprofit agencies seeking UI student involvement through volunteerism, service learning, and internships. We value our local nonprofit agencies as partners, co-educators, and collaborators.

  • Working together, we can increase opportunities for UI students to meaningfully serve and engage in the local community and beyond.
  • Experiential education opportunities offered through community-based organizations help develop students' academic and career interests and instill leadership and citizenship skills.
  • Community engagement provides an important link between classroom learning and civic responsibility.
  • Involvement through service provides students with deep learning opportunities and helps them develop a sense of belonging in the local community and beyond.

Information for Faculty

The Community-Based Learning Progam assists faculty with locating community-based organizations interested in developing partnerships for academic service-learning courses, community-based research, and publicly-engaged scholarship. Faculty may arrange a consultation by contacting the Community-Based Learning Program.

At the University of Iowa, service learning is defined as "... a way of teaching and learning that incorporates community engagement into academic coursework. Guided reflection links community-based student experience to course learning goals and objectives. Service-learning experiences respond to real community needs and enhance students’ civic responsibility." (UI Center for Teaching.)
