Advice From Employers

After each fair, we ask employers to complete an evaluation and to provide advice for students on how to prepare for the next fair. Here are the responses from the Spring and Fall 09 evaluations:

  • Dress professionally - in a suit and tie if you are looking for an internship and/or full-time position. First impressions count!
  • Practice your handshake - it should be firm. And practice a "pitch" to introduce yourself.
  • Be aggressive and assertive. Know what you are looking for - not just "anything." Have a good idea of what you want to do, what your interests are and how they would fit with that specific organization and position. Don't make us guess how you would fit in - tell us!
  • Research, research, research. Know all about the companies you are interested in. Search their websites and utilize the information provided through your Career Services office. Know which positions they are recruiting for.
  • Come prepared with 2-3 questions for each organization. Showcase your knowledge and interest!
  • Talk to everyone. Be open to new companies and positions you might not have given any thought to.
  • Don't focus on the map as much. Initiate conversation with as many businesses as you can.
  • Internships are very important - especially in today's economy!
  • Start early, build relationships and keep in contact!
  • Follow-up is key - send thank you letters!
