Leadership Studies
DEO - David Baumgartner, Ph.D
Undergraduate nondegree program: Certificate in Leadership Studies
Leadership Studies is a multidisciplinary academic field that focuses on leadership and draws upon theories and applications from a wide variety of related fields such as the social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, political science, and anthropology), the humanities (e.g., philosophy and history), as well as professional fields including management and education. Studying leadership from a multidisciplinary perspective provides a more complex view of the phenomenon than does viewing it from the simplicity of a unidisciplinary approach. The courses in this department examine the ethical issues and principles relevant to leadership; theories and styles of leadership; the dynamics of interactions between leaders, followers, and group members; the impact of leaders on organizations and communities; and leadership skills such as goal setting, effective communication, creating a vision, and empowering others.

Certificate in Leadership Studies
The need for competent and effective leaders in today’s complex and global communities has always been a pressing issue and, consequently, leadership development programs have a long history in higher education.
The Certificate in Leadership Studies will provide a structure for involvement, introducing students to the concepts of leadership while giving them the necessary, hands-on leadership experiences to begin the life-long development of these skills. By earning the Certificate in Leadership Studies, students are introduced to these basic goals and skills and are called on to make a conscious commitment to lead.
The Certificate in Leadership Studies is adminstered by the Pomerantz Career Center and supported by a multi-disciplinary committee composed of faculty from the Colleges of Business, Education, and Liberal Arts & Sciences, and staff from the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership.
