What Can I Do With a Major in... Geoscience
|
Geosciences students study the composition, structure, and other physical aspects of the Earth in order to study its geologic past and present. Various courses in chemistry, physics, and mathematics are required and courses over the historical and physical geology may facilitate learning by examining solids, liquids, and gases which make up the earth; about rock, mineral, and fossil identification; and about plate tectonics, and geological time. Class experience in the geosciences area is usually lecture and laboratory based course work. To enjoy this major a student must have a strong interest in science and knowledge of the Earth. Good skills for this major include and aptitude for outdoor work and travel, logic and problem solving skills, and good communication skills. A Master's degree is usually a minimum educational requirement and a Ph.D. is required for high-level research and college teaching positions. Many geoscientists are classified into two areas including Geologists and Geophysicists. |
