Spring Break Service Learning in Chicago
Interested in community action work? Ready to make a difference in the lives of others? Want to get a glimpse of what it is like to live and work in Downtown Chicago?
During the week of spring break, the Center for Credit Programs is offering a Spring Break Service Learning Course in Chicago. Students will travel to and stay in Chicago over spring break. The Chicago Iowa Club alumni chapter has recently adopted Thomas Chalmers Elementary Specialty School on the SW Side of Chicago. Students will work Monday through Thursday at the school organizing the library since Chalmers does not have a full-time librarian on staff. Throughout the week, University of Iowa students will be able to interact with the Chalmers students. On Friday there will be a "Grand Re-Opening" of the newly organized library. As part of the ceremony there will be a panel discussion with the Chalmers kids where they can ask questions about college preparation and life at The University of Iowa.
In the evening hours, the UI students will be exposed to an array of dining, arts and entertainment offerings that make Chicago one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Iowa students will write a brief paper upon completion of this project.
Roundtrip transportation from Iowa City will be provided. Lodging in Chicago will be provided as part of the course fee. Students can locate this course and others offered as a part of the Spring Break Adventure Series by typing in the keywords “spring break” on ISIS.
Course fee: $95.00 (This fee will cover 5 nights of lodging, meals and arts/entertainment activities in Chicago.)

On Friday, April 3rd, 2009 GreatAmerica will be hosting its first "Corporate Finance and Credit Analysis Seminar." Students will have the opportunity to learn from and present to Senior Executives in an interactive presentation setting. All attendees will learn the "Five C's of Credit" and gain a better understanding of credit analysis through a series of presentations and case studies. In addition, GreatAmerica will present their career and internship opportunities in credit and finance.
For students majoring in accounting or finance and are currently either a Junior or Senior in standing.

Astros broadcaster and UI alumnus Brett Dolan will visit campus Nov. 14
UI alumnus Brett Dolan, a play-by-play radio announcer and color
analyst for the Houston Astros, will visit campus Friday, Nov. 14.
KRUI Sports Director Jordan Loperena will interview Dolan at noon on
89.7 FM.
The public is invited to a question and answer session with Dolan at
2:30 p.m. in Room 101 of Becker Communication Studies Building.
Dolan also plans to speak to broadcast journalism and communications classes during his visit.
Dolan, a native of Casey, Iowa, earned a bachelor's degree in
communication studies from the UI in 1992. He worked at KRUI as a
student and worked his way up as a broadcaster in the minor leagues
before joining the Astros in 2006.

On Wednesday, September 17, starting at 3pm, career diplomat Brian Flora will be on campus for an afternoon information session. It will be held in the Pomerantz Center, room C310. Dr. Flora, a 35-year veteran of the Foreign Service, will discuss career and internship possibilities with the U.S. Department of State. The presentation will last approximately 30 minutes, and will be followed by ample time for questions. Following the information session, beginning at 4pm, he will be available for 10-minute one-on-one counseling sessions. When: Stop in Wednesdays between 3:30 and 4:30pm or Thursdays between 9:00 and 10:00am. There won't be any sessions on March 1 or the week of March 13-17. Sessions end April 25, 2006.

You know how to log on - what's next? This question and answer time is designed to provide students with more informaiton on how to better utilize UI Employment Expo. Students with questions about Expo are encouraged to attend these seminars. Pomerantz Career Center staff will clarify any concerns, big or small.

Diversity on LaSalle Street 2006 for Big 10+ universities held in Chicago on Friday, February 3, 2006. Flyer (.pdf) This proram is designed to offer juniors and sophomores an opportunity to visit and network with corporations on LaSalle Street in Chicago, and learn more about the diverse range of business related career paths available. Students will visit the Chicago Board of Trade, two corporations such as LaSalle Bank, Accenture, Mercer, Aon and more. There will also be a luncheon and networking reception at the end of the day. Pomerantz Career Center will be taking up to 15 juniors and sophomores in any major from The University of Iowa to participate in this program. Students from across the Big Ten+ will be participating. Participants will be chosen based on their application including the following: completed application, 250-word essay and resume.
Pomerantz Career Center will provide lodging for Thursday, February 2, transportation to and from Chicago, and dinner on Thursday evening. Breakfast and lunch on Friday, February 3 will also be provided. Each participant is asked to pay $50 towards the total cost. This is payable to your University bill. Four Hire!...Helping Retain Iowa's Graduates
The Greater Des Moines Partnership's Young Professionals Connection is excited to announce Four Hire! a new program designed to retain the best Iowa college graduates for elite job opportunities in the Des Moines Metro area. With a concept inspired by the television show "The Apprentice", this opportunity will offer a group of select college graduates from all of Iowa's colleges and universities the chance to showcase their skills, personality and drive through various challenges. Following the completion of two challenges, four contestants will be hired and given jobs with the four premiere companies sponsoring this contest.
"This is an opportunity for Iowa graduates to get their foot in the door at our major employers to show them what they are capable of" said Mary Stier, 2005 Partnership Chair and publisher of The Des Moines Register. "The Four Hire! program will provide these young professionals with invaluable experience for their resume that could catapult their careers without leaving Iowa's borders."
We are currently accepting applications from any senior currently enrolled at an Iowa college or university. In order to participate in the competition, students must meet the following eligibility requirements: attend a four year college or university in Iowa, graduate in May or August 2006, travel to Des Moines to participate in the competition, willing to live and work in the Greater Des Moines area if selected, and willing to comply with all pre-employment screening if selected.
To apply, students must submit an application, a resume and a three minute video. All application materials must be received at the Greater Des Moines Partnership by Friday, November 25.The application will be reviewed and 24 people will be selected to compete in the first round of challenges. Students will be notified of their selection in December and an official announcement will be made in January at the Greater Des Moines Partnership Annual Dinner (date tbd). Students will be required to travel to Des Moines on at least three occassions. Hotel accommodations and food/per diem will be provided when appropriate. The challenges will take place in late January and February with a final decision to be made by March 5th.
