Interested in experiencing a National Political Convention? The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is offering an opportunity to participate in the Republican and/or Democratic National Convention Seminars held in August and September 2012!   You are invited to attend an information session on Tuesday, April 10th at 4 p.m. in C31 Pomerantz Center to learn more about The Washington Center’s National Convention Academic Seminars!

The August and September convention seminars will include:
1.    Examining the role of national political conventions in the process of nominating and electing a party’s candidates for president and vice president of the United States 
2.    Placing students in volunteer fieldwork positions with the party, convention committee, host committee, media, and many other convention related organizations and events
3.    Offering components for which most institutions typically grant 2-4 credits for a two-week program with estimated contact hours at 56 hours or more for over two weeks

The IOWA Challenge calls on all Hawkeyes to excel, stretch, engage, choose, and to SERVE. The impulse to serve others is strong among Hawkeyes, and on Wednesday, January 26, you will have a great chance to find a way to serve others in the community. Over 40 community agencies will be on campus looking for volunteers at our Spring Volunteer Fair.  We will also feature a new "Mini Alternative Spring Break" Fair within the Volunteer Fair.  This is your chance to learn about various Service Trips occurring over Spring Break.  We hope to see you there!

Fall 2010

The University of Iowa recognized as Public University of the Year by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Programs
Earlier this month in Washington, D.C., representatives from The University of Iowa’s Pomerantz Career Center accepted an award on behalf of the University, recognizing the long-standing partnership the organization and The University of Iowa have had, in addition to exceeding other criteria in place measuring 630 public four-year colleges and universities that participate with The Washington Center.  Recipients typically have strong procedures in place to publicize the program, carefully advise students of the program and opportunities involved, and assist students with the application process. More importantly, The University of Iowa consistently has students who are academically strong and committed to contribute and learn from their Washington experience involved in the program.
Michael B. Smith, president of The Washington Center commented, “Through the excellent work of the Pomerantz Center, Iowa sends substantial numbers of strong, well-advised students who compete very successfully for internship opportunities, do well in our academic classes and make good use of our civic engagement and leadership-oriented programming.  The events surrounding our 35th anniversary will be focused on those who have contributed most over time to The Washington Center’s strength and ability to serve college and university students, so they give us a particularly appropriate time to recognize Iowa for what it is – not only Public University of the Year but also perennially one of our very strongest university partners.” 

The University of Iowa has been involved with The Washington Center program for more than 30 years, with more than 922 students participating since that time.  Coordinated through the Pomerantz Career Center, students participate in professional internship experiences in non-profit, for-profit and governmental agencies throughout the Washington, DC area, and during the summer, beyond at locations including London, England and Sydney, Australia. While participating, students take an academic seminar, and participate in activities related to their career interests. Students often receive between 9 and 12 academic credits, depending on course of study.

Past UI students have interned at sites, such as: the Department of the Interior, U.S. Navy Museum/Naval Historical Center, the White House and Merrill Lynch.  Every year, nearly 50 UI students participate in the program.  “The partnership The University of Iowa has with The Washington Center is a win-win. Our students have been valuable additions to the classroom and workplace through internships in the DC area for hundreds of employers, and the students come away with professional experiences and opportunities to really experience the Nation’s Capitol and help them further their careers.” said David Baumgartner, Ph.D., Assistant Provost, Enrollment Management.

Pomerantz Career Center provides services to students and alumni from The University of Iowa. Services available include career and major exploration, assessment tools, career advising, and job and internship search resources such as HireaHawk.com, an online recruiting system. The Pomerantz Career Center hosts several career fairs annually, career education programs for students, mock interviews and many other programs and services. The Career Leadership Academy receives State Farm Grant!

The University of Iowa has received $100,000 in Good Neighbor Citizenship Grants from State Farm Insurance. One $50,000 grant, awarded to the UI's Pomerantz Career Center for the third consecutive year, will support the ongoing development of programs in the center's Career Leadership Academy. The other $50,000 grant will provide support for the Management Information Systems degree program in the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business.

Pomerantz Career Center will provide lodging for Thursday evening (April 8) prior to the event, and transportation to and from Chicago. Lunch on the day of the events will also be provided. Individuals will be responsible for the cost of their dinner Thursday evening, Friday evening, Friday breakfast and incidentals.

American Advertising Federation - Education Day Features Creative Academy
Cedar Rapids - Iowa - The Advertising Federation of Cedar Rapids/Iowa City will host their annual Education Day on Friday, November 6th at the Kirkwood Continuing Education Center at 7725 Kirkwood Boulevard SW.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with sessions lasting until 3 p.m. $35 for all day including lunch.

All area high school and college students looking to expand their knowledge in the world of advertising and marketign are invited to come experience this event.

The day's activities include five hands-on creative sessions led by local advertising and marketing professionals designed to help studnents learn more about the creative aspects of the industry. At the end of the day, students will be given the opportunity to try their hand at developing a big idea often used as the platform for creative advertising development.

Clint Runge, co-founder and creative director of Archrival, a distinguished Midwest-based brand strategy and design firm know for it's strategically creative and never-say-die work ethic will serve as keynote speaker over a noon-time networking lunch. Runge will be sharing Archrival's experience, strategies and work on hitting the constantly changing youth-minded market in working with clients such as Red Bull, Old Chicago, and Microsoft.

The AAF is the oldest national advertising trade association, representing 40,000 professionals in the advertising industry. With a national network of 200 ad clubs located in ad communities across the country, the American Advertising Federation protects and promotes the well-being of advertising. Spring Break Service Learning in Chicago

Interested in community action work? Ready to make a difference in the lives of others?  Want to get a glimpse of what it is like to live and work in Downtown Chicago?

During the week of spring break, the Center for Credit Programs is offering a Spring Break Service Learning Course in Chicago.  Students will travel to and stay in Chicago over spring break.  The Chicago Iowa Club alumni chapter has recently adopted Thomas Chalmers Elementary Specialty School on the SW Side of Chicago.  Students will work Monday through Thursday at the school organizing the library since Chalmers does not have a full-time librarian on staff.  Throughout the week, University of Iowa students will be able to interact with the Chalmers students.  On Friday there will be a "Grand Re-Opening" of the newly organized library.  As part of the ceremony there will be a panel discussion with the Chalmers kids where they can ask questions about college preparation and life at The University of Iowa. 

In the evening hours, the UI students will be exposed to an array of dining, arts and entertainment offerings that make Chicago one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world.  Iowa students will write a brief paper upon completion of this project. 

Roundtrip transportation from Iowa City will be provided.  Lodging in Chicago will be provided as part of the course fee. Students can locate this course and others offered as a part of the Spring Break Adventure Series  by typing in the keywords “spring break” on ISIS.

Course fee:  $95.00 (This fee will cover 5 nights of lodging, meals and arts/entertainment activities in Chicago.)

UI alumnus Brett Dolan, a play-by-play radio announcer and color
analyst for the Houston Astros, will visit campus Friday, Nov. 14.
KRUI Sports Director Jordan Loperena will interview Dolan at noon on
89.7 FM.

The public is invited to a question and answer session with Dolan at
2:30 p.m. in Room 101 of Becker Communication Studies Building.
Dolan also plans to speak to broadcast journalism and communications classes during his visit.

Dolan, a native of Casey, Iowa, earned a bachelor's degree in
communication studies from the UI in 1992. He worked at KRUI as a
student and worked his way up as a broadcaster in the minor leagues
before joining the Astros in 2006.

On Wednesday, September 17, starting at 3pm, career diplomat Brian Flora will be on campus for an afternoon information session. It will be held in the Pomerantz Center, room C310. Dr. Flora, a 35-year veteran of the Foreign Service, will discuss career and internship possibilities with the U.S. Department of State. The presentation will last approximately 30 minutes, and will be followed by ample time for questions. This valuable experience will allow students to learn more about leading Iowa employers and the endless opportunities available in the state.  Often the experience will lead to a summer internship or possibly full-time employment. Chosen candidates will:
·Participate in an intensive experience, which will allow students to add a finished project to their resume.

GREATER DES MOINES - The Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Young Professionals Connection (YPC) is now accepting applications for its annual competition Four Hire!. In its second season, Four Hire! is designed to attract and retain Iowa college graduates to the Des Moines area for job opportunities offered by four metro companies. GCommerce, Inc. and Siemens Building Technologies join first-season veterans, Allied Insurance and Wells Fargo, as participating companies for the second installment of “The Apprentice”-like competition.   

“Not only did Allied Insurance hire one of the winners of the Four Hire! competition, we also brought two additional finalists on board,” said Paul VanDenBosch, Vice President of the Des Moines Regional Office at Allied Insurance. “The finalists all possessed the leadership qualities we look for in our new hires and we’re eager to find more talent through the 2007 Four Hire! program.”

YPC representatives participated in the three Regent universities job fairs September 18-20, soliciting applications from college seniors graduating in Spring 2007. Graduating seniors from all Iowa colleges and universities are encouraged to apply. Applications are due November 24, 2006. Twelve finalists will be selected from a pool of applications and three-minute videos submitted by students from around the state. The candidates will begin the competition in January by participating in an interview process and two challenges, which will be held in Des Moines . Challenges will be judged by a panel of representatives from each of the four companies as well as the Four Hire! committee. Employment will be offered to the four winning candidates by the participating companies. Positions in the companies will range from engineering, insurance, sales, project management, and information technology to computer services.

“We are very excited to be a part of the Four Hire! program. We feel it is important to our growing community’s workforce to retain the talent that comes from Iowa’s colleges and universities to here in the metro,” said Sherry Huhen, accounting manager at GCommerce, Inc. “Companies through out Des Moines, including GCommerce, Inc., benefit greatly by attracting first-rate talent needed to grow businesses.”

YPC’s Four Hire! competition was designed to promote the professional opportunities available in the region and highlight the potential for a rewarding and successful career in the Greater Des Moines area. Eight of the 12 finalists from the first season stayed in the Des Moines area to pursue a career.

YPC is a committee of the Partnership with a mission of promoting a social and cultural environment that is attractive to young professionals. Their social, civic and charitable programs focus on connecting people to each other and to the community.

The Partnership is the economic and community development organization serving Central Iowa . Its mission is to maximize local resources to address opportunities for economic and community growth.  Greater Des Moines will reach its full potential only through a united economic development effort, with one voice, one mission, one focus.

Diversity on LaSalle Street 2006 for Big 10+ universities held in Chicago on Friday, February 3, 2006. Flyer (.pdf) This proram is designed to offer juniors and sophomores an opportunity to visit and network with corporations on LaSalle Street in Chicago, and learn more about the diverse range of business related career paths available. Students will visit the Chicago Board of Trade, two corporations such as LaSalle Bank, Accenture, Mercer, Aon and more. There will also be a luncheon and networking reception at the end of the day. Pomerantz Career Center will be taking up to 15 juniors and sophomores in any major from The University of Iowa to participate in this program. Students from across the Big Ten+ will be participating. Participants will be chosen based on their application including the following: completed application, 250-word essay and resume.

Pomerantz Career Center will provide lodging for Thursday, February 2, transportation to and from Chicago, and dinner on Thursday evening. Breakfast and lunch on Friday, February 3 will also be provided. Each participant is asked to pay $50 towards the total cost. This is payable to your University bill. Four Hire!...Helping Retain Iowa's Graduates
The Greater Des Moines Partnership's Young Professionals Connection is excited to announce Four Hire! a new program designed to retain the best Iowa college graduates for elite job opportunities in the Des Moines Metro area. With a concept inspired by the television show "The Apprentice", this opportunity will offer a group of select college graduates from all of Iowa's colleges and universities the chance to showcase their skills, personality and drive through various challenges. Following the completion of two challenges, four contestants will be hired and given jobs with the four premiere companies sponsoring this contest.

"This is an opportunity for Iowa graduates to get their foot in the door at our major employers to show them what they are capable of" said Mary Stier, 2005 Partnership Chair and publisher of The Des Moines Register. "The Four Hire! program will provide these young professionals with invaluable experience for their resume that could catapult their careers without leaving Iowa's borders."

We are currently accepting applications from any senior currently enrolled at an Iowa college or university. In order to participate in the competition, students must meet the following eligibility requirements: attend a four year college or university in Iowa, graduate in May or August 2006, travel to Des Moines to participate in the competition, willing to live and work in the Greater Des Moines area if selected, and willing to comply with all pre-employment screening if selected.

To apply, students must submit an application, a resume and a three minute video. All application materials must be received at the Greater Des Moines Partnership by Friday, November 25.The application will be reviewed and 24 people will be selected to compete in the first round of challenges. Students will be notified of their selection in December and an official announcement will be made in January at the Greater Des Moines Partnership Annual Dinner (date tbd). Students will be required to travel to Des Moines on at least three occassions. Hotel accommodations and food/per diem will be provided when appropriate. The challenges will take place in late January and February with a final decision to be made by March 5th.
